Description

Start your cultural adventure with a hotel pickup for the South Valley Circuit and journey to Tipón, an extraordinary Inca site located southeast of Cusco. Spanning over 2,200 hectares, Tipón showcases a remarkable system of agricultural terraces, ceremonial fountains, and a sophisticated irrigation network that still functions today. Historians believe Inca Wiracocha built this complex as a royal retreat for his father, Yawar Waqaq. Its strategic location and architectural brilliance make Tipón one of the finest examples of Inca hydraulic engineering.

Next, we travel to the pre-Inca city of Pikillaqta, once a major urban center of the Wari civilization. Situated about 32 kilometers from Cusco, this vast site impresses with its well-organized layout, long straight streets, and high walls. On the way, enjoy sweeping views of the Huacarpay Lagoon, a tranquil highland lake surrounded by dramatic Andean landscapes.

Our final stop is the picturesque town of Andahuaylillas, home to the stunning San Pedro Church—often called the “Sistine Chapel of the Andes.” This 17th-century colonial church dazzles with vibrant murals, gold-covered altars, and a richly decorated interior that blends Andean and Spanish influences.

Start your journey with a hotel pick-up and head east of Cusco to explore three remarkable sites. First, visit Tipón, a vast archaeological complex spanning over 2,200 hectares. Built by Inca Wiracocha as a royal estate for his father, Tipón impresses with its 12 fertile agricultural terraces, masterfully engineered irrigation system, and ceremonial water fountains. This site, located at 3,500 meters (11,480 ft), showcases advanced Incan hydraulic technology and remains a vital agricultural area even today.

Continue to the Pikillaqta Archaeological Complex, once a major city of the Wari civilization. Spread across 3,421 hectares (8,453 acres), Pikillaqta sits at 3,350 meters (11,000 ft) and offers stunning views of Lake Huacarpay. Despite its current name meaning “lousy town,” the site was an impressive pre-Incan settlement with well-planned streets and walls, reflecting Wari urban organization.

Finally, visit Andahuaylillas, a charming town known for its exquisite Church of San Pedro, often called the “Sistine Chapel of the Americas.” Admire its baroque-style frescoes, altarpieces, and murals housed in a colonial-era church built atop an Inca structure. Wander the scenic plaza adorned with coral trees and palms before returning to Cusco around late afternoon.
