How to Get to the Starting Point of the Salkantay Trek?

  1. Fly to Cusco
    From Lima or other major cities in Peru. Cusco is the mandatory starting point for any Machu Picchu trek.
  2. Cusco → Mollepata → Challacancha
    • On the first day of the tour, a van will pick you up early from your Cusco hotel (between 4:30 and 5:00 a.m.).
    • The drive takes about 3 hours to Mollepata, where you’ll stop for breakfast.
    • Then, continue for 1 more hour to Challacancha, where the trek officially begins.

What is the best time to do the Salkantay Trek?

Dry Season:
April to October (Best months: May–September)

  • Stable weather, clear skies, and breathtaking landscapes.
  • June, July, and August are the months with the highest influx of tourists.

Avoid the rainy season:
November to March

  • Muddy trails, possible closures due to landslides or extreme weather.

What to Pack for the Salkantay Trek?

Clothing & Footwear

  • Thermal layers for cold nights (especially at Soraypampa camp)
  • Light, breathable clothing for daytime
  • Comfortable trekking pants
  • Waterproof/windproof jacket
  • Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with good grip
  • Swimsuit (for optional hot springs in Cocalmayo – Santa Teresa)
